We’ve come a long way since the parietal wall paintings of animals discovered in Lascaux, France in 1940. The drawings are merely rudimentary cave drawings from ca. Upper Paleothic Period.
The showcase of animals in Animal Portraits moves on through Babylonia, when domesticated pets and farm animals were featured in art, and then through ancient Egypt.
Here we see an original painting by Ted Blaylock, titled “Western Bluebird.”
The piece measures 23 x 19 framed
12 x 8 oval image under glass

Nikolai Efimovich Timkov (1912-1993) was a prominent Soviet Russian painter, recognized as an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation and a member of the Saint Petersburg Union of Artists (formerly the Leningrad branch of the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation). Nikolai Timkov’s paintings are considered important to the Russian Impressionist movement as a subtle, yet significant, rebellion against the rigid tenets of Socialist Realism, which was the officially sanctioned art style of the communist movement in the Soviet Union. While not overtly political, Timkov’s embrace of Impressionistic techniques—characterized by visible brushstrokes, an emphasis on light and atmosphere, and a focus on capturing fleeting moments of nature—stood in stark contrast to the didactic, heroic, and often propagandistic themes demanded by Socialist Realism.
